Last evening, just before 6:00 p.m. MST, a magnitude 6.5 earthquake centered near Challis, Idaho, occurred.  The earthquake was felt in Pocatello and Chubbuck and as far away as Montana.

The earthquake was the largest to occur in Idaho since the 1983 temblor that measured 6.9 near Sun Valley, Idaho.

Earthquakes occur frequently in Idaho, but most are of relatively low magnitude.  In the last year, according to earthquaketrack.com, Idaho experienced 525 earthquakes.
