SIPH Announces Two Additional Cases of COVID-19 in Southeast Idaho

0

(Press Release, March 31, 2020)

Southeastern Idaho Public Health (SIPH) has confirmed two additional cases of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in southeast Idaho. One in Bannock County and one in Bingham County, bringing the total number of cases to six in southeast Idaho (four in Bannock County and two in Bingham County). Details on the new case are listed below. Southeastern Idaho Public Health includes eight counties (Bannock, Bear Lake, Bingham, Butte, Caribou, Franklin, Oneida, and Power).

The Bannock County patient is a male in his 30s. He is self-isolating at home. This case appears to be travel-related. Contact tracing is ongoing.

The Bingham County patient is a female in her 40s. She is hospitalized at this time, and we do not know if this case is travel related. The investigation is ongoing.

In the United States, there have been 140,904 cases and 2,405 deaths as of March 30, 2020, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Epidemiologists at SIPH are working to investigate possible contacts of cases. All household members of the confirmed cases have been asked to self-isolate at home for a prescribed period of time. If other people are found to have been exposed, health officials will provide guidance to these individuals and they will be asked to self-monitor for the development of symptoms.

SIPH will continue to monitor the situation closely and is working with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, city and county leaders, schools, emergency management, healthcare providers, and our community at large to help prevent the spread of this virus.

To prevent the spread of COVID-19:

– Follow Governor Little’s Statewide Stay-Home Order at https://coronavirus.idaho.gov/
– Stay home if you are sick.
– Avoid people who are sick.
– Practice social distancing (6ft).
– Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
– Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue or your sleeve when you cough or sneeze.
– Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
– Cleaning and disinfecting surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with germs using a disinfecting solution.

For more information, call SIPH’s call center Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at (208) 234-5875.

Idaho’s Primary Election to Remain on May 19, Will be Conducted by Mail

(Press Release, March 30, 2020)

Governor Brad Little (Official Photo)

Boise, Idaho – Governor Brad Little and Secretary of State Lawerence Denney announced today there will be no change in Idaho’s primary election date of May 19.

The election will be conducted by mail pursuant to the existing laws for absentee voting due to concerns about the spread of coronavirus.

The move is necessary after it became clear that sufficient polling places and poll workers could not be obtained for the election.

The Governor and Secretary of State will work with the Attorney General and the clerks of Idaho’s 44 counties to refine the absentee voting process for these unique circumstances, including setting appropriate deadlines for registering to vote, requesting a ballot be sent to your home, and returning the ballot.

Governor Little will issue a proclamation addressing the election in the coming days.

“While the coronavirus situation may change how we practice our right to vote in this primary election, it is important to keep our election dates in place,” Governor Little said. “I urge all voting Idahoans to request their absentee ballots as soon as possible so they can vote from home this year,” Governor Little said.

“Voting absentee is the right thing to do under these circumstances, and my office has already set up a website that allows Idaho voters to register and request an absentee ballot,” Secretary Denney said.

Idahoans can request an absentee ballot at:

Vote Early Idaho

“We all hope Idaho’s situation with coronavirus will improve before election day on May 19, but decisions cannot wait. Governor Little is making the right call to conduct the election by mail. It is important for all Idaho citizens of voting age to request an absentee ballot and fully exercise our precious right to vote. This is our chance to show the world that, even under difficult conditions, our American values are alive and well,” Senate President Pro Tem Brent Hill said.

“Voting is one of our most basic rights as American citizens, and it is important that Idahoans continue to exercise this right this year by voting absentee,” House Speaker Scott Bedke said.

“Idaho’s county clerks appreciate the move to absentee to keep voters and poll workers safe. We are prepared to carry out this election and ensure the people of Idaho can exercise their right to vote,” said Kristina Glascock, Twin Falls County Clerk and president of the Idaho Association of County Recorders and Clerks.

President Donald J. Trump (White House Official Photo by Shealah Craighead)

Our Nation is tremendously grateful for all Americans who have chosen the noble profession of healing and caring for others. This is especially true as our extraordinary doctors and other talented medical professionals have collectively risen to the challenge of combating the coronavirus pandemic in communities large and small across the United States. This year in particular, on National Doctors Day, we recognize the remarkable men and women who treat their fellow Americans, find cures for the diseases and illnesses we face, and never waver in their efforts to treat every patient with the dignity, respect, and empathy they deserve.

As our Nation continues to combat the novel coronavirus, the tireless work and dedication of our medical and healthcare professionals is evident in the hospitals and treatment centers where they care for the sick, inside the labs and research facilities where vaccines and treatments are being developed, and from the podiums where they have continuously reassured and informed the American people. These brave patriots on the frontlines of the war against this invisible enemy are the most talented, innovative, and hardworking medical professionals in the world. Thanks to their incredible, life-saving work, no country is better prepared to fight this pandemic than the United States, and we remain confident that their steadfast resolve will see our Nation through to victory over this disease.

This National Doctors Day, we express our immense gratitude to the men and women who are caring for and treating patients across our country and whose commitment to serving others has never been clearer. Their contributions to the health and well-being of every American are immeasurable. As one Nation, we pray for their continued health and strength, and we ask God to bless them with the wisdom and resolute spirit to care for all those who need healing.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, DONALD J. TRUMP, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim March 30, 2020, as National Doctors Day. I call upon the people of the United States to observe this day with appropriate ceremonies and activities.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this thirtieth day of March, in the year of our Lord two thousand twenty, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and forty-fourth.
