At a recent Liberty Dinner, Representative Karey Hanks shared her journey to political involvement and encouraged conservatives to stay positive and stay in the fight to preserve our freedom.
Hanks began her speech by reviewing her early life and her political career. She said her decision to get involved in politics was driven by the principle that “righteousness exalteth a nation;” and explained that there are four areas in which this righteousness must be exhibited. On a personal, spiritual level, Hanks stressed that we must “get good with God. Those nations only are blessed whose God is the Lord.” For those with families, we must make quality teaching time a high priority. Then we must become informed, for Hosea said, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.” Finally, we must “get anxiously engaged,” for to quote Edmund Burke, “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.”
To become informed, Rep. Hanks recommended such sources as the John Birch Society’s Overview of America; Skousens’ book, The 5,000 Year Leap; and news outlets such as the Pocatello-Chubbuck Observer, True Idaho News, and Idaho Dispatch; and the advice of trusted leaders.
Hanks then posed the question, “Why is it important to get involved, and to warn your neighbor?” She proceeded to describe the sudden downturn our nation has taken, citing TP wars, baby formula shortages, rising fuel costs, as well as the ever-morphing “health” orders and the assaults on free speech, and asked, “What’s next?” Citing Nazi leader Hermann Goering, she explained, “The only thing you need to turn humans into slaves is fear.”
Although it would be easy to be discouraged, Hanks stressed that now is actually a time for optimism, for as the prophet Elisha said to his fearful servant when they were surrounded by the Syrian army: “Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them.” She then listed a series of positive results of the primary election:
- Twelve of the good old boys were sent packing–that’s HUGE!
- There may be a change in Senate leadership, “the place good bills go to die”.
- There will be a new House Speaker.
- As Attorney General, Raul Labrador will exert a great deal of power and influence with Governor Little.
- Though Ron Nate, Chad Christensen, and she herself lost their races, other good people were elected.
- Many were motivated by lockdowns/mandates and the continued refusal to enact meaningful tax relief.
In closing, Rep. Hanks said, “May we continue to keep the love of freedom in our hearts–let it burn within us and motivate each one of us to find our path and work for our families and neighbors to preserve our God-given rights.”
