(From the Desk of Senator James E. Risch, June 24, 2023)
One year ago today, the Supreme Court ruled in favor states’ rights to protect unborn children.
In 1973, Roe v. Wade was wrongly decided and last year’s Dobbs decision was a step in the right direction to fix it.
But there is much more we can do to further protect life.
Pro-life pregnancy centers across the country, including in Idaho, experienced a dangerous uptick in vandalism and violence last year. To ensure these life-saving centers can continue to provide vital resources for women and unborn babies, I introduced the Pregnancy Center Security Act, which would establish a grant program to enable security upgrades.
Despite the Supreme Court’s ruling, the Biden administration has gone to great lengths to advocate for abortions and promote dangerous mail-order abortion drugs. I’ve expressed my grave concerns about the approval and distribution of mifepristone in a letter to FDA Commissioner Robert Califf and an amicus brief in the case of Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine v. FDA.
The Biden administration has even exploited resources and taxpayer dollars to illegally fund abortions at VA health clinics and pay the travel expenses for service members and their dependents to receive an abortion. In April, I voted to prevent taxpayer dollars meant for our nation’s veterans to be used to provide illegal abortion services. I also introduced legislation to ensure the Department of Defense is using taxpayer dollars to strengthen our armed forces and appropriately protect all lives.
Clearly, the fight for life is not over. I will continue to prevent taxpayer dollars from funding abortions and advocate for the unborn in the U.S. Senate.
