Pocatello, ID–The winners of this year’s AMVETS Americanism Contest, sponsored by AMVETS Post 1, were honored at a luncheon held at Mountain Valley Baptist Church last Saturday.

AMVETS is unique in holding patriotic contests for students in all grades, K through 12. There are different categories, each appropriate to the student’s grade level. The 2023 contest theme was “What Does Freedom Look Like?” Students in Grades 2-5 created a poster based on that theme, and older students wrote an essay. Kindergarteners and 1st Grade students colored a picture of the American flag and answered four questions about it.

The winning entries were sent to the AMVETS National Americanism contest. Their creators are:
- Jonathan Simmons, Kindergarten
- Luke Simmons, 2nd Grade
- Nevaeh Cotterell, 3rd Grade
- Nathan Simmons, 4th Grade
- Audrey Simmons, 6th Grade
- Abigail Simmons, 7th Grade
- Heidi Crowder, 8th Grade
Each student received a cash prize, presented by Oliver AhMu of the Sons of AMVETS. This year’s prize sponsors included the AMVETS Auxiliary; Sons of AMVETS; Anita Valladolid; John Crowder, publisher of the Pocatello Chubbuck Observer; Jess Davies and Oliver AhMu of Premier Mortgage; and Heritage Baptist Academy.
