(City of Pocatello Press Release, July 17, 2024)
The community is invited to the grand opening celebration and ribbon cutting for the unveiling of the completed origami art display Wednesday, July 24 at 11 a.m. in the Pocatello Regional Airport terminal.
Thanks to substantial donations from the Bistline Foundation, Ifft Foundation, Pocatello-Blackfoot Chapter of the Japanese American Citizens League, and thousands of hours of volunteer labor under the tutelage of master folder, Hugh Suenaga, a unique display is now housed inside the terminal building at the airport.
“We would like to thank these organizations and the volunteers for making this exhibit possible,” said Alan Evans, Airport Manager. “Without their generosity, we would not have been able to create such a magnificent display.”
The origami exhibit boasts nine kusudamas, four tessellations beautifully framed and backlit, a senbazuru display of 1,000 cranes with 600 of those being intricate heart cranes (a crane that displays a heart shape on its back), and several arrangements of origami silk roses each folded from a single sheet of paper.
Evans said, “The craftsmanship in this exhibit is top-notch. From the origami pieces to the display cases, the entire display is an amazing piece of art.”
