Last night local veterans and supporters turned out to welcome Stephanie McKay Johnson, daughter of Pocatello’s only Medal of Honor recipient, Sgt. James E. Johnson, to our city.
Johnson is in town to take part in a Medal of Honor ceremony to be held tonight, Saturday, November 2. The ceremony begins at 5:30 pm at the Bannock County Veterans Memorial Building, 300 N. Johnson Avenue. A community meal will be served following the ceremony, and everyone is invited to attend.

A post on their social media page by the Bannock County Veterans Memorial Association reads, “Welcome to Stephanie McKay Johnson on her arrival to Pocatello. A huge thank you to all who attended and welcomed her here. Thank [you] to the Civil Air Patrol, USAF Auxiliary, POW*MIA Awareness Association, John Crowder, Melissa Hartman, American Legion Post 4, American Legion Auxiliary, the Pocatello Regional Airport, Idaho State Veterans Home, Senator Crapo’s Office and staff, and the Marine Corps League Steven Dee Merrill Detachment 698.”
Johnson spoke briefly to the crowd, thanking those in attendance for the warm welcome and for honoring her father’s memory.
