Scorecards are Tools, Not Threats
Scorecards Empower Citizens, Not Politicians
By: Idaho Dist. 24 State Senator Glenneda Zuiderveld
Bill rating groups like the Idaho Freedom Foundation and Stop Idaho RINOs often get criticized but usually just for doing their job: rating legislation. What many forget is that there are numerous bill-rating systems out there. Whether you agree with these particular groups or not, their scorecards are valuable tools. They invest serious time researching bills—whether through the lens of freedom, the Republican platform, agriculture, business, or local governance.
These scorecards simplify your research. They clearly outline what each bill does, how your legislators voted, and why it was rated the way it was. Frankly, I can’t understand why any voter would be upset with tools that make it easier to hold elected officials accountable.
Remember, you don’t need to agree with every rating or conclusion. But these scorecards put information directly into your hands, empowering you to learn, question, and engage effectively. They equip you to confidently reach out to your legislators, whether to challenge decisions or to thank us for standing strong on issues important to you.
Some legislators hate these scorecards, and it’s no mystery why. They reveal how they voted. But that’s exactly why they matter. As a voter, you deserve to know the truth. The more informed you are, the more power you have.
When I speak at events, I remind folks: We live in a Constitutional Republic and YOU are the boss. Every election is a job interview. Legislators are working to earn your trust so you’ll “hire” us with your vote.
But just like running a business, you can’t disappear for four years and expect things to stay on track. You have to check in. You have to show up. If you’re not watching, how do you know your lawmakers are protecting your freedoms, honoring their oath, and spending your tax dollars wisely?
At the end of the day, it’s up to you to think for yourself. Scorecards are just tools they help cut through the noise and make your research easier. Don’t blindly trust anyone not even me. Investigate. Verify. Ask questions.
Even when I get a low rating, I don’t get upset because I believe in transparency, and I trust you. I know voters are smart. You can think critically, research thoroughly, and see through the spin.
That’s exactly why some legislators fear these scorecards because they know you’re paying attention.
So be bold. Be curious. Stay engaged. You have more power than you realize and that gives me hope. When voters are informed, freedom wins.
Below are links to different scorecards. I’m doing my best to make it easier for you but you still have to do the work.
