(Bannock County Press Release, November 4, 2025)

Bannock County is teaming up with the United Way of Southeastern Idaho to roll out an exciting new program aimed at helping working parents stay in the workforce. The KIDS First Coalition officially launched last month, taking on one of the biggest challenges facing our regional economy: quality, affordable, and accessible childcare.

Why It Matters

Childcare shortages aren’t new in Idaho. Even before the pandemic, nearly half of Idaho’s children lived in “child care deserts,” where there simply aren’t enough licensed childcare spots to meet demand. For many families, that means long drives, unlicensed care, or no options at all.

At the same time, Bannock County’s labor force has started to shrink. Between May 2024 and May 2025, the number of employed residents dipped slightly — a sign that some people are leaving the workforce altogether.

Fewer workers means tougher times for local businesses and less money circulating in the community. Simply put: when parents can’t find childcare, everyone feels the impact.

The KIDS First Solution

That’s where the KIDS First Coalition comes in. The program treats childcare as essential economic infrastructure — just like roads and broadband. Using a Tri Share model, the cost of childcare is divided evenly between three partners:

  1. Employers
  2. Parents (employees)
  3. Public funding

Each pays one-third, making childcare more affordable for families while helping providers stay in business. Participating employers can expect to see better retention, lower turnover, and stronger workforce participation.

Bannock County, along with the City of McCammon, allocated one-time seed funding to help launch the pilot program.

The Coalition brings together childcare providers, community organizations, and business leaders — all working toward the same goal: keeping Idaho’s workforce strong.

A Call to Local Businesses

Bannock County and United Way are inviting local employers — big and small — to join the pilot program. By participating, your business can:

  • Offer employees reliable, affordable childcare
  • Reduce absenteeism and training costs
  • Strengthen your talent pipeline
  • Show your commitment to local families and economic stability

Participating businesses will get support with communications, technical assistance, and program integration.
