Idaho Freedom Caucus – A Thanksgiving Lesson: What the Pilgrims Taught Us About Freedom and the Failures of Socialism

(Idaho Freedom Caucus Message, November 27, 2025)

As we gather across Idaho to celebrate Thanksgiving, we reflect not only on our blessings but also on the hard-won lessons that shaped the foundation of America. The story of the Pilgrims is more than a tale of perseverance, it’s a powerful reminder of why freedom, personal responsibility, and individual incentive are essential to a thriving society.

Many Americans don’t realize that the earliest settlers experimented with a communal, socialist-style system under the Mayflower Compact. When the Pilgrims landed in 1620, they agreed to hold land, harvests, and goods in common. Everything produced was shared equally, regardless of effort or contribution. While well intentioned, this approach nearly destroyed the colony.

Governor William Bradford later described how the system “bred confusion and discontent” because it removed the incentive to work. Those who labored diligently received no more than those who did very little, and productivity collapsed. Food shortages spread, morale dropped, and the settlement faced starvation.

By 1623, the Pilgrims abandoned the communal model and assigned private plots to each family. What followed was a dramatic transformation. Individuals took pride in their work. Production increased. Trade flourished. Starvation turned into abundance. The colony was saved not by collective ownership, but by the power of personal responsibility and the freedom to enjoy the fruits of one’s labor.

This historical experience echoes a truth we continue to defend today: that socialism—whatever the misguided intentions may be, fails wherever it is tried. It suppresses motivation, undermines prosperity, destroys resourcefulness, breeds discontent, and erodes individual liberty. As Winston Churchill famously said, “Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy.” And Milton Friedman warned, “A society that puts equality before freedom will get neither.”

The Pilgrims learned these lessons the hard way. Their story is a timeless reminder that human flourishing comes from freedom, opportunity, and the dignity of work, not authority or government-controlled systems that punish success and weaken communities.

This Thanksgiving, the Idaho Freedom Caucus members encourage Idahoans to reflect on the blessings of liberty and the principles that make our state and nation strong. May we remain grateful for the freedoms we enjoy, steadfast in defending them, and committed to ensuring that future generations inherit a nation grounded in faith, family, and free enterprise.

From all of us at the Idaho Freedom Caucus—Happy Thanksgiving, Idaho!
