The Bannock County Sheriff’s Office reports that missing adult William Woodland, 84, was located deceased on Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2025, following an extensive, multi-agency search effort.
Woodland was reported missing by his family on the evening of Sunday, Dec. 7.
Detectives and deputies located Mr. Woodland on South Putnam Mountain after receiving a tip from a community member. His family has been notified.
A former Bannock County District Judge, Mr. Woodland honorably served the community for more than 20 years until his retirement in 2022.
“I want to extend the deepest condolences of the entire Bannock County Sheriff’s Office to the Woodland family,” said Sheriff Tony Manu. “Judge Woodland was a pillar of our community and the justice system.”
The Sheriff’s Office extends its sincere gratitude to the community members who provided information, as well as the many agencies that assisted in the search, including Bannock County Search & Rescue, Idaho State Police, Portneuf Air Rescue, Pocatello Police, Fort Hall Police, Fort Hall Fish & Game, Bingham, Twin Falls, Butte, Power, and Caribou County Sheriff’s Offices, and all who contributed to the operation.
