(Chubbuck Police Department, December 11, 2025)

On 12/10/25, at approximately 8:52 pm, an adult male ended his own life while sitting in his vehicle as it was parked in the Petco parking lot, located within the City of Chubbuck.

Prior to the incident occurring, the male was driving his vehicle southbound on Yellowstone Avenue, when an Idaho State Police Trooper observed that the vehicle he was driving didn’t have working taillights. The Trooper conducted a traffic stop with the vehicle and the male driver pulled into the nearby Petco parking lot.
The Trooper contacted the male and informed him of the reason for the traffic stop and noted that the subject seemed to be extremely nervous, so he asked him to exit the vehicle. The male refused to exit the vehicle and stated that he did not want to go to jail. He then presented a handgun and pointed it at himself.
The Trooper initially tried to grab the gun and stop the subject, but the male resisted, so the Trooper stepped away from the doorway and the vehicle. Unfortunately, moments later the subject used the firearm to shoot himself.
The Trooper began life saving measures with the assistance of other emergency responders who arrived on scene. The subject was ultimately transported to the hospital via ambulance, but sadly he died. Out of respect for the subject’s family and friends, we will not be releasing his name.

The Chubbuck Police Department is actively investigating these circumstances and has obtained both the involved Trooper’s body-camera video and in-car video. This is an ongoing investigation and no further details will be released at this time.
