Pocatello–The Steven Dee Merrell Detachment #698 of the Marine Corps League is a local service organization of Marines, Fleet Marine Force Corpsmen and veterans. The main purpose of the Marine Corps League is to “aid voluntarily and to render assistance to all present and former Marines and (FMF) Corpsmen as well as to their spouses, orphans, and parents.” The League also supports Toys for Tots, provides burial services for veterans and works with all veteran service organizations (VSO’s) to support veterans from all branches of the military.
The Roy Weaver Memorial Fund was established at the Idaho Marine Corps League Department Convention in 2011. The purpose of the Fund is to present Scholarships to local students seeking post-secondary education. For the past four years, the Department has awarded $1,000.00 to applicants that applied through the Steven D Merrell Detachment.
As part of the Idaho Marine Corps League Department, the Steven Dee Merrell Detachment will again be participating in the Department’s awarding of a Roy Weaver Memorial Scholarship.
Application Requirements:
- Must be a resident of Idaho and a senior in high school.
- Must submit a completed scholarship application.
- Must submit a letter from the school counselor or equivalent demonstrating acceptance in or intent to enroll in either academic or vocational/technical studies.
- Must submit a short essay of 450 to 550 words describing future goals, intent to move forward with extracurricular and service activities while in college, motivation for furthering education and the importance of Americanism to you. The letter must be typewritten and double-spaced. The quality of the essay and neatness of the application may be used when a tiebreaker is needed.
- Must submit Letters of recommendation from two school faculty members who have direct knowledge of your performance.
- Must submit a current sealed transcript, including current curriculum and GPA.
