The City of Pocatello is pleased to announce the launch of the KNOW ME File, designed to improve how first responders assist individuals with cognitive, developmental, behavioral, medical, or communication-related challenges during emergency situations.
City officials worked collaboratively to develop the KNOW ME File to improve access to critical information during fire, police, or medical responses, helping to strengthen communication with individuals who may need additional support. The program was developed and implemented with the help of a Pocatello Emergency Communications Officer who has a personal connection to its mission, bringing both professional experience and personal perspective to the initiative.
Information submitted through the KNOW ME File is securely maintained and accessible only to emergency responders when they are dispatched to a specific address or when an individual’s name is provided during a call. Participation in the KNOW ME File is voluntary and confidential and is open to individuals of all ages. This information should be updated each year to make sure first responders have the most accurate information in order to help those in need.
The file allows families, individuals, and caregivers to share important information, including:
- Preferred methods of communication
- Sensory sensitivities or behavioral triggers
- Emergency contact information
- Medical needs, conditions, Durable Medical Equipment
- A recent photograph
“The KNOW ME File reflects the City’s ongoing commitment to public safety, inclusion, and meaningful community engagement, while supporting individuals and families impacted by a wide range of disabilities and medical conditions,” said Mayor Mark Dahlquist.
While first responders may not always be able to identify an individual’s specific needs prior to arrival, having accurate information available through the KNOW ME File can significantly improve communication, response effectiveness, and safety during emergencies. The KNOW ME File allows Emergency Communication Officers to search information by address or by name, helping responders better understand an individual’s needs and support more informed interactions, especially in high-stress situations where every second counts.
Providing accurate information to 9-1-1 is essential to ensure responders can access the KNOW ME File. If no address is provided to Emergency Communication Officers during a call, if only a general location is given, or if the address or name provided is incorrect, emergency responders may not be able to view the KNOW ME File information.
Enrollment is now open to residents of Pocatello and surrounding law enforcement agencies including all of Bannock County that use the Flex, previously known as Spillman, Interface. Families, individuals, and caregivers can enroll a loved one by scanning the QR code [see below], visiting pocatello.gov/959/Vulnerable-Person-KNOW-ME-FILE, or by enrolling in person at the Pocatello Police Department, 911 North 7th Avenue, or Pocatello Fire Station One, 408 E. Whitman, during business hours.
