The City of Pocatello will celebrate the unveiling of a new honorary street sign recognizing Idaho Judge Sergio Gutierrez. Judge Gutierrez will be in attendance for the unveiling, marking a special occasion to honor his contributions to Idaho.
The unveiling ceremony will take place October 19 at noon at S. 8th Avenue and Red Hill Road, across from the Pond Student Union Building. Community members are invited to attend and join the City in recognizing Judge Gutierrez and his legacy.
The Pocatello City Council approved the honorary renaming of South 8th Avenue between Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Humboldt Street to Gutierrez Avenue. The honorary designation replaces the previous designation of Cesar Chavez Avenue.
The recommendation was made by the Street Renaming Ad Hoc Committee, a group of community members formed to evaluate potential names for the honorary street designation. After reviewing several possibilities, the committee selected Judge Gutierrez and presented its recommendation to the Mayor and City Council during the August 13 work session.
Judge Gutierrez made history as Idaho’s first Latino district court judge and later served on the Idaho Court of Appeals. Throughout his career, he expanded access to justice by helping establish statewide standards for certified court interpreters and dedicated his time to mentoring youth across Idaho.
Born into a migrant farm worker family, Judge Gutierrez worked in Idaho’s fields as a child before earning his GED, graduating from Boise State University, and becoming an attorney. Early in his career, he worked with the Idaho Migrant Council and Idaho Legal Aid Services, advocating for migrant farm workers and underserved communities.
The designation is honorary, and existing street names and addresses will remain unchanged.
