Pocatello, League of Idaho Cities Raising Funds for Idaho Youth Advisory Council during Idaho Gives

0

(City of Pocatello, May 2, 2022)

It’s that time of year! Idaho Gives is May 2-5, and the City of Pocatello along with the League of Idaho Cities are working to help raise funds for the Idaho Youth Advisory Council (iYAC) that serve our cities. Funds raised will be divided amongst the youth councils across the state, such as the Pocatello Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council.

Youth councils build leadership skills in youth, encourage fresh perspectives, create problem solvers, and offer civic educational opportunities, along with a plethora of other benefits for our cities and their youth. The Pocatello Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council has been in existence since 1992, and members throughout the years have participated in and planned a variety of activities. This year, the Youth Council organized a booth at the Portneuf Valley Environmental Fair and is preparing to host their first-ever Teen Mental Health Awareness 5K scheduled for May 21. Members will also be participating in the annual Association of Idaho Cities Youth Conference in June.

Idaho Gives is an opportunity for a person to donate to their favorite non-profit organization and May 2-5 have been designated as giving days. Please join us by supporting Idaho’s Youth Advisory Councils, and our local Youth Advisory Council.

May 4, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., is the “May the 4th be with you” event at the Historic Downtown Pavilion. At noon, Mayor Brian Blad will be at the Pavilion to give the Mayoral Proclamation.

This event will include local nonprofit vendor booths to learn more about different organizations across Pocatello. Matt Davenport of KPVI is the Idaho Gives Campaign Chair and will be in attendance at this year’s event. The theme is “May the 4th be with you,” so feel free to dress up for the Star Wars theme. Lunch will be provided by Intermountain Gas and the Pocatello/Chubbuck Chamber of Commerce.

To learn more about the May 4 event, please contact Wendi Ames from United Way of Southeastern Idaho.

The five awardees for the 2022 “Pocatello’s Promise of Tomorrow Mayoral Scholarship” have been chosen.

The scholarship program is in its third year. Each two-year scholarship awards the student $2000, or $500 per semester, to use at Idaho State University.

“I am incredibly excited to announce this year’s 2022 recipients. All of our applicants are very deserving of a Mayoral Scholarship and come from all different backgrounds.” Pocatello Mayor Brian Blad went on to say, “The quality of all the applications made it very difficult for the selection committee to make their recommendations and to pick just five recipients.”

Following are the recipients, their high schools, and their future area of study:

Lucas Whitehead – Highland High School – Secondary Education, Social Work, or Psychology

Devonney Curran – Century High School – Diagnostic Medical Sonographer

Daniel Quayle – Highland High School – Secondary Education

Sami Armstrong – Pocatello High School – Cosmetology

Jaylee Crum – Highland High School – Nursing

The Mayoral Scholarship Committee reviewed and selected the awardees based on possible roadblocks to higher education, personal and higher education goals, and financial need.

The scholarship was made possible through a collaboration with the Pocatello-Chubbuck Chamber Foundation and funded by contributions from Idaho Central Credit Union, Lookout Credit Union, D.L. Evans Bank, Citizens Community Bank, and U.S. Bank.

“I want to give a big thank you to our partnerships, without these partnerships, the Mayoral Scholarship program would not be possible,” Mayor Blad said. “I appreciate the investment each has made in the future of our community and in our students.”
