Should students who have enlisted in the military be permitted to wear stoles signifying their chosen service at high school graduations? That question will be discussed at a work session of the Pocatello/Chubbuck SD25 school board tomorrow, Tuesday, May 11, at noon.
The question arises after a concerned parent posted on Facebook on April 26 that students entering the military after graduation were not being permitted to wear the military stoles provided to them by their chosen service. The topic was added to the Work Session agenda shortly thereafter.
In response to questions regarding the meeting and the proposed changes, Courtney Fisher, Communications & Community Relations spokesperson for SD 25 said, “Graduation is a rite of passage, a time to celebrate scholastic and personal achievements, and a time to look toward the future. Therefore, the policy related to graduation dress and conduct is currently being reviewed. Recommendations for revisions to the policy will be presented to the PCSD 25 Board of Trustees for discussion at the Board Work Session on Tuesday, May 11 at noon. Any policy revisions will be on the agenda for action at the Regular Board Meeting on Tuesday, May 18 at 5:30 p.m.
The honors stoles and cords traditionally worn at graduation signify the academic accomplishments graduates earn in high school. This year, in preparation for the Class of 2021 graduation ceremonies, the PCSD 25 Board of Trustees will be reviewing the dress code policy to consider an amendment that will allow military stoles for those graduates that plan on enlisting directly into a branch of the military. The proposed revisions to the policy may be reviewed online at sd25.us.”
Tomorrow’s meeting is open to the public, and interested parties may address the Board, but will be asked to complete the Request to Appear Before the Board form prior to the start of the meeting. The meeting will be held in the Education Service Center Board Room, located at 3115 Pole Line Road, Pocatello, ID 83201.
