Pocatello for Accountable Government Entities, a local government watchdog group, sent each local candidate a questionnaire to inquiring about their qualifications for the position they seek, and their priorities if elected. P.A.G.E. is posting each candidates’ responses on its Facebook page.
On April 17, P.A.G.E. published Bannock County Assessor Candidate Greg Cates’ responses to their questionnaire. Cates outlined what he sees as the primary problem facing Bannock County: “the fact [that] our local government is way too big and way too focused on property taxes. They’re literally balancing their budgets on the backs of the citizens.” To solve this, Cates promises to restore parity to the assessment process, ensuring that both commercial and residential properties are assessed accurately. When asked about his qualifications, Cates pointed to his extensive managerial experience and his organizational skills, explaining that since the assessor’s staff is already trained in appraising properties, “it’s more important for the Assessor to be an effective leader and supervisor than anything else.”
The complete questionnaire can be read on P.A.G.E.’s Facebook page, here.
