In an effort to streamline Idaho’s elections, the 2023 Legislature voted to move the March primary to May. The bill, HB138, sponsored by Dustin Manwaring of Pocatello, had the unfortunate effect of eliminating the presidential primary altogether.
The Republican Party hopes to address this problem at their Summer Meeting, scheduled for June 23-24. Region 2 Chairman Clinton Daniel has prepared a resolution urging Governor Little to call a special session for the purpose of repealing HB138. Should the governor prove unwilling to act, the resolution declares that “the Idaho Republican Party shall enact such rules and as needed and practical to provide for Idaho Republican voters to participate in the selection of delegates in March to the Republican National Convention and therefore the Republican nominee for President of the United States.”
The resolution is signed by IDGOP Chairwoman Dorothy Moon, Vice Chairmen Daniel Silver and Mark Fuller, Secretary Maria Nate, Treasurer Steve Bender, the Chair or Vice Chair of each of Idaho’s 6 Regions, and a Who’s Who of Republican leaders from across the state.
