Pocatello–Dr. Shanon Brooks, founder and president of Utah-based Monticello College and well-known speaker on the New Economy, will be presenting his new 8-hour workshop on Georgics this Friday, July 21, in south Pocatello.

The word “Georgic” is derived from a pair of Greek words meaning “to work the earth.”  While the term was originally used to describe poems on agricultural or rural themes, Dr. Brooks explains that its fuller meaning is “the basic concept that man’s liberty, indeed, his life is dependent upon himself, working the earth and depending on Providence.”  (For more information, see Dr. Brooks’ full article on this topic, here.)

Friday’s workshop will cover the following topics:

  • 90-Day Composting
  • Bio Char Production
  • Soil Regeneration
  • Year Round Food Production
  • Food Preservation
  • Landrace Seed Procurement
  • Cold Climate Natural Beekeeping
  • 18-hour Sourdough Bread Production
  • In-Ground and Root Cellar Food Storage

The class costs $95 per person.  While no refunds can be given, a participant who finds himself unable to attend may send someone else in his place.  Participants should bring their own lunch, water, a hat and gloves, and some way to take notes.
