(City of Pocatello Press Release, November 27, 2023)

The City of Pocatello Human Relations Advisory Committee is proud to announce Reading Time with the Queens as the recipient of the City’s 2023 Human and Civil Rights Award. This award recognizes their outstanding contribution to fostering a welcoming and inclusive community and their dedication to promoting understanding and acceptance through innovative and engaging educational programs.

Reading Time with the Queens has played a pivotal role in Southeast Idaho, particularly in Pocatello. Their unique approach, which includes drag performers reading picture books, singing songs, teaching sign language, and engaging in craft-making activities, has been instrumental in teaching vital lessons of self-acceptance and respect for others to their monthly attendees.

Despite facing challenges and opposition, Reading Time with the Queens has remained steadfast in its mission. Their resilience and commitment to their cause serve as examples of strength, diversity, and inclusivity. This falls in line with the City’s Welcoming Resolution.

“This award is gratefully accepted. Thank you to the Human Relations Advisory Committee for doing its best to create a welcoming community for all people. Reading Time with the Queens strives to create the spaces that we needed as queer and Deaf kids, and we are grateful to serve our home, the City of Pocatello, one book at a time,” said the president of Reading Time with the Queens Miss Cali.

The City of Human Relations Advisory Committee takes nominations for their annual Human and Civil Rights Award on the city website in the spring of each year. Watch the City of Pocatello Facebook page for an opportunity to nominate your organization or individual for next year’s award.
