The Catholic Diocese of Boise has officially come out against Prop 1, the Idaho abortion initiative.
Several weeks ago, we noted that two of Idaho’s largest religious bodies, the Catholic Church and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS/Mormon church), could have a major impact on the outcome of Prop 1. Together, these churches can mobilize hundreds of thousands of Idahoans if they choose to engage.
With the Diocese of Boise publicly opposing the initiative, this marks a significant victory for those working to protect life in Idaho. The statement was released in a video posted on the Diocese’s official Facebook page.

The Diocese outlines three primary reasons for opposing Prop 1:
- It permits abortions well into the third trimester.
- It allows minors to obtain abortions without parental consent.
- It allows any “medical provider” to determine “fetal viability,” rather than requiring a licensed physician.
These are substantial concerns, and it is encouraging to see one of Idaho’s major churches take a clear public stance against Prop 1.
Hopefully, the LDS Church will also speak out and mobilize its membership against what many Idahoans view as an extreme, anti‑life initiative.
