(Bannock County Press Release, August 6, 2026)
BANNOCK COUNTY, Idaho – Bannock County is warning residents about a false claim circulating online that directs homeowners born in the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s to contact their local appraiser’s office and request a “Form 1098-SR.”
The Bannock County Assessor’s Office has thoroughly reviewed the online claim and confirmed there is no evidence of any federal program providing a nationwide property tax freeze for seniors. Residents are advised that the information being shared online is inaccurate and misleading.
Property taxes and associated relief programs in Idaho are not governed by federal entities; rather, they are handled strictly at the state and local levels. In Idaho, eligible homeowners may instead qualify for the legitimate state-level Property Tax Reduction Program. Eligibility for this legitimate program is determined based on specific criteria, including age, income, and other statutory requirements. The program also provides valuable property tax assistance to qualifying veterans.
If you are not currently enrolled in the Idaho Property Tax Reduction Program and would like to learn whether you meet the qualifications, the Bannock County Assessor’s Office encourages you to contact their staff directly. Applications for the state reduction program are accepted annually from January 1 through April 15. County staff members are available throughout the year to answer questions, verify legitimate program requirements, and assist residents with the standard application process.
Idaho homeowners are strongly encouraged to rely exclusively on official information provided by the Idaho State Tax Commission and their respective county governments. The Assessor’s Office also encourages homeowners to consult with qualified tax professionals regarding any questions about their individual tax situations or financial planning.
