Guest Column–Dorothy Moon: Trump Indictment Latest Blow to Americans’ Faith in Government

Trump Indictment Is Latest Blow to Americans’ Faith in Government

By: Dorothy Moon, IDGOP Chairwoman

Dorothy Moon, Chairwoman of the Idaho Republican Party

In our society, the trust and confidence of the people in government institutions is vital. The misuse of law enforcement to target political rivals has deeply eroded Americans’ faith in our institutions.

Conservative Republicans have always emphasized the need to preserve the delicate balance of power outlined in our Constitution. Misusing law enforcement to target political rivals undermines this balance and is antithetical to the American way. We need only look at the experiences of citizens in troubled countries such as Cuba, Russia, and Nicaragua, where dictators routinely persecute their political opponents, to see how dangerous of a precedent this sets.

The American public has been inundated for 6+ years with endless allegations of criminal activity by President Donald Trump. The media and our government agencies worked hand-in-hand to spin a web of alleged Russian collusion by our President. These allegations were subject to extensive investigation, which concluded that there was insufficient evidence to establish any criminal conspiracy, but not before the media and partisan politicos used it as a bludgeon to attack their key political rival. Not surprising, when Russian collusion fell apart, new allegations of criminal activity quickly followed.

The recent indictment of President Donald Trump by Biden’s Department of Justice has a chilling effect on political discourse. It not only undermines the principles of fairness and justice, but also stifles the political process when a candidate for President is indicted by the justice department of the incumbent. When citizens fear retribution for their political alignment, the foundation of democratic debate crumbles. Americans must be able to freely engage in political discussion, without the risk of retribution. The dangers associated with a sitting US President misusing the Department of Justice to indict and arrest a top political rival cannot be ignored.

It is essential to consider this context when evaluating the misuse of the DOJ and intelligence agencies and its impact on public trust. Transparency, accountability, and adherence to the rule of law should be the cornerstones of our efforts. Implementing rigorous oversight mechanisms, promoting ethical conduct, and reinforcing the impartiality of our justice system are critical steps toward restoring public confidence.

This week, the House of Representatives had an opportunity to exhibit such rigorous oversight and promote ethical conduct, when a resolution to censure Rep. Adam Schiff (D) was presented. The resolution alleged unethical behavior when he was Chair of the House Intelligence Committee; that he “purposely deceived his Committee, Congress, and the American people” and “used his position and access to sensitive information to instigate a fraudulently based investigation, which he then used to amass political gain and fundraising dollars.” The vote to censure Rep. Schiff failed, with 20 Republicans voting with Democrats to block the censure. This is yet another disappointing failure by our government to hold accountable the actions of our elected officials.

Many Americans are left wondering if there is any hope for restoring faith in our government institutions. It would require a commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that our law enforcement agencies and our elected officials operate independently and impartially, devoid of political influence. It is imperative that we champion the restoration of trust in our justice system. Only when we begin to uphold these principles of transparency, accountability, and impartiality, can we begin to rebuild the faith of the American people in our institutions and ensure a stronger, more resilient democracy for our children and grandchildren.

Idaho Republican Party Chairwoman Dorothy Moon issued the above guest column that first published in the Times-News, and now will be published in other media outlets around Idaho.

(City of Pocatello Press Release, June 16, 2023)

The City of Pocatello Water Department will conduct its annual system flushing program beginning June 20, 2023, and will take approximately three weeks to complete. The flushing program is essential to the maintenance of the City’s water system and serves the following purposes:

  • Enhances water quality by clearing any sediment from distribution pipes
  • Verifies the condition and proper operation of fire hydrants and valves
  • Verifies sufficient water flow for fire suppression

Tips during system flushing:

  • There may be a temporary drop in water pressure during system flushing
  • Water may be rusty or cloudy (discolored water is not harmful and will clear up in a few hours)

If you see a City crew flushing a hydrant on your street, avoid using tap water, the washing machine, and the dishwasher until the flushing is completed.  Also, if you see crews working in the area, please drive carefully and treat them like any other road construction crew.

If you have any questions, please call Alex Rice at 208-234-6182.

Residents Oppose Allowing Kids at Drag Shows

0

June 16, 2023

Pocatello–In the lead-up to tomorrow’s “Pride in the Park” event at Caldwell Park, a group of concerned citizens is trying to raise awareness of their concerns about drag shows being performed where children are present.

Several members of the group conducted a “standout” at two of Pocatello’s busiest intersections on Wednesday evening, holding large red-and-yellow signs that read “SAY NO! to Kids at Drag Shows in IDAHO”.  They said that the responses of passing motorists were mostly positive: “a LOT of horn honks and just a few flip offs.”

Local grandmother Lynda Eggiman explained what motivates her and the other participants: “While parents work to raise good children and take their children to wholesome activities other people are filling their heads with pornography.  So we’re on the street corners with signs hoping parents will find out for themselves what is happening. Not everyone is asleep–we get a lot more horns honking in support than we do shouts of the left’s favorite word.”

Another group brought the signs to last night’s Pocatello City Council meeting, using them to express the comments that Mayor Blad and the Council will no longer allow to be voiced.

Little, Critchfield Roll Out “The Story of America” History Curriculum for Idaho Schools

0

(State of Idaho Press Release, June 15, 2023)

Boise, Idaho – Governor Brad Little and Superintendent Debbie Critchfield announced today the availability of the fair, factual American history resource for Idaho schools called “The Story of America.”

“The Story of America” is an American history curriculum for middle school and high school students that tells the factual story of our nation’s history while reinforcing writing and critical thinking skills.

“This curriculum presents a picture of America that aligns with our Idaho values of embracing patriotism and a sense of pride about the success of our great country, and it teaches American history in a fair and factual way,” Governor Little said.

“Not only does this curriculum support a students’ knowledge of America, but it offers literacy skills like writing, analyzing, evaluating and presenting as part of these lessons,”Superintendent Critchfield said. “These skills will help prepare our students to be strong American citizens, capable of self-government at the local, state, and national level.”

Governor Little and Superintendent Critchfield cited declining history and civics scores for students across the country as part of the reason to ramp up efforts to increase students’ understanding of American history.

“The Story of America” curriculum was created by leading experts in the field of American history and will be available to all school districts in Idaho to use for teaching in 8th grade and beyond. It is designed to supplement curricula already in use by Idaho educators.

The curriculum has been vetted and tested by the Idaho State Department of Education (SDE), which will facilitate its use in Idaho schools.

School districts across Idaho are encouraged to take advantage of the resource for their students and teachers and contact SDE for more information.
