Pocatello, ID–The winners of this year’s AMVETS Americanism Contest, sponsored by AMVETS Post 1, were honored at an ice cream social at the Bannock County Veterans’ Memorial Building on Wednesday.

AMVETS is unique in holding patriotic contests for students in all grades, K through 12. There are different categories, each appropriate to the student’s grade level. The 2022 contest theme was “Why Should We Honor and Respect our Veterans?” Students in Grades 2-5 created a poster based on that theme, and older students wrote an essay. Kindergarteners and 1st Grade students colored a picture of the American flag and answered four questions about it.
The winning entries were sent to the AMVETS National Americanism contest. Their creators are:
- Jonathan Simmons, Kindergarten
- Luke Simmons, 1st Grade
- Katie AhMu, 2nd Grade
- Nathan Simmons, 3rd Grade
- Audrey Simmons, 5th Grade
- Abigail Simmons, 6th Grade
- Heidi Crowder, 7th Grade
Each student received a certificate recognizing their achievement, and a check from the Sons of AMVETS. Prizes were presented by Oliver AhMu of the Sons of AMVETS.
