The Blackfoot Police and Blackfoot Street Department are aware of the significant impact interstate traffic is having on our community.
In response, signage has been placed to encourage through traffic to use Highway 91 for southbound travel rather than South Meridian. We have increased patrols in all areas where traffic concerns have been observed or reported. A speed radar trailer has also been deployed on S. Meridian in an effort to reduce speeding. We understand that even with these efforts, it has caused a strain while traveling in Blackfoot.
The Idaho Transportation Department is actively working to determine the next steps for the Riverton Road overpass and the reopening of the interstate.
We remain committed to addressing all traffic-related concerns. If you need assistance from first responders, please contact dispatch at 208-785-1234 (non-emergency) or dial 911 (emergency). The Bingham County Dispatch Center has received numerous calls regarding traffic issues caused by the interstate shutdown and is very busy. We appreciate your continued patience as we work on long-term solutions.
We understand this situation has placed a burden on travel throughout our community, and we appreciate your cooperation. As we receive information from ITD, we will update.
