With 100% of precincts reporting, the unofficial election results for the Pocatello Mayor’s race held last night show that candidate David Worley, with 3745 votes (33.51%) will be facing incumbent Mayor Brian Blad in a runoff election.  Blad received 5162 votes (46.18%), failing to receive the majority of the votes cast that would have been required to avoid a runoff.  Council member Chris Stevens finished third with 2143 votes (19.17%).

The runoff election must be held within 30 days.  Bannock County Clerk Jason Dixon is expected to meet with the two candidates, Blad and Worley, sometime today to discuss the runoff process.  The election between the two, who will be the only candidates on the ballot, is expected to take place on or around November 30.

Brady Chapel Open House Slated for Veterans Day

0

(City of Pocatello Press Release, November 1, 2021)

A Pocatello landmark will again be open to the public Veterans Day.

The Pocatello Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) is hosting an open house at Brady Chapel, located in Mountain View Cemetery, Thursday, November 11 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.  At the event, HPC members will provide tours and information about the nearly century-old structure.

“The open house will provide an opportunity for the community to visit and learn more about the Brady Chapel and the current efforts to restore and preserve this local icon,” said Jim Anglesey, City of Pocatello Staff Liaison to the HPC.  “The event will include a special presentation and musical tribute at 1 p.m. that honors the Civil War and Spanish American War veterans interred at Mountain View Cemetery.”

The group is raising funds to restore Brady Chapel ahead of its 100th anniversary in 2022 with the Brady Chapel Centennial Campaign, and donations will be accepted at the open house.  “Support from the community is crucial to preserving the Brady Chapel,” Anglesey said.  “In doing so, we hope the Chapel may be used and enjoyed by the public for generations to come.”

Those who can’t attend the open house but would like to donate to the effort can find more information at bit.ly/2S8UIam.

Brady Chapel was dedicated on Memorial Day in 1922 and was constructed by the family of former Idaho Governor and Senator James Brady following his death.  Built in a French Gothic Revival style, the Chapel was designed by renowned architect Frank Paradice.  In the 1970s, Brady Chapel was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

For more information on Brady Chapel, visit pocatello.us/171/Brady-Chapel, and more on the efforts of the Historic Preservation Commission can be found at pocatello.us/255/Historic-Preservation-Commission.

Letter Writer Ben Gregersen: “Stop Raising Taxes and Fees on Poor People”

0

November 1, 2021

Dear Editor,

I’ve been involved in Republican Party politics for a long time and a lot of people have been asking for my opinion on the upcoming election.  I’m writing this letter to the editor to help answer that question for some people who want to know.

As many of you know, Pocatello’s taxes, utility fees, and building fees are way too high for a small town like ours.  The reality is that the high taxes and fees in this community are only hurting poor and middle-class people.  We really don’t have millionaires and billionaires in Pocatello.  The top 1% of income earners are just not anywhere to be found in Pocatello.  The people living in the highland high school area would be considered middle class citizens anywhere else in the country.  It’s past time for City Hall to wake up and realize that their tax and spending increases are mostly hurting poor people.  The vast majority of Pocatello citizens are living below the poverty line.  These politicians at City Hall are robbing the poor to grow the government.

If you agree with me that the City of Pocatello needs to stop raising taxes and fees on poor people, please join me in voting for David Worley for Mayor, Bill Miller, John Ruth, and Rick Cheatum for City Council.  These are the only conservative candidates on the ballot for Pocatello City Hall.  I know that these individuals can accomplish great things together for our City.

Ben Gregersen, Pocatello

Gov. Little Joins Lawsuit Challenging Biden Vaccine Mandate for Federal Contractors

(Idaho Governor’s Office Press Release, October 29, 2021)

Governor Brad Little (Official Photo)

Boise, Idaho – Governor Brad Little announced today he joined a multistate lawsuit challenging President Joe Biden’s Executive Order 14042, also known as the federal contractor vaccine mandate.

Biden’s Executive Order 14042 requires employees of federal contractors be fully vaccinated by December 8, 2021, with few exceptions.

“President Biden’s federal contractor vaccine mandate not only harms Idaho workers and businesses that partner with the federal government, but it forces states to implement Biden mandates that are without legal precedent.  Tens of millions in university research dollars are at stake.  This is coercive federal overreach, and it must be stopped,” Governor Little said.

The Idaho Office of the State Board of Education is also party to the lawsuit on behalf of Idaho universities.  The universities could lose up to $89 million in existing federal contracts, much of which involves important research.

Idaho’s participation in the suit was facilitated by Attorney General Lawrence Wasden and his office.

Georgia, Utah, Alabama, Kansas, South Carolina, and West Virginia also joined the lawsuit. Florida filed a similar challenge this week.

In addition, Governor Little wrote a letter to President Biden today urging him to halt implementation of the federal contractor vaccine mandate because it harms Idaho businesses.

“Many Idaho businesses of all sizes engage in contracts with the federal government to provide products and services that ensure our country can function properly.  Now, business owners who pursued the American dream and worked to fill important needs for our nation are being coerced into policing your vaccine mandates,” Governor Little wrote.  “Some of these Idaho contractors have been in longstanding business relationships with the federal government, and changing their contracts midstream forces them to choose between losing their employees or giving up their business.  It is just plain wrong.”
