A Modern Story of Heroes in the Fight for Freedom

by:  Columnist Art da Rosa

Pocatello-Chubbuck Observer Columnist Art da Rosa

Many of us will be celebrating Memorial Day this weekend.  Perhaps a visit to the tombstones of the fallen heroes, followed by a barbeque with family and friends.  Few will pay any attention to the story of Christopher Ahn, a US citizen from naturalized North Korean parents, and a former US Marine.

Ahn loves his country, the United States of America.  He also despises communist North Korea.  So, when Ahn was approached by a group called Free Joseon (formerly the Cheollima) to help free diplomats of the hermit dictator country, Ahn accepted the call.

The mission was to infiltrate the North Korean embassy in Spain and retrieve a defecting ambassador.  It was supposed to be a pre-arranged event.  Unfortunately, things did not go as planned.  The ambassador changed his mind at the last minute, deciding not to defect.  Ahn and his group ended up escaping empty-handed.

Nobody was hurt.  No harm, no foul?  Not quite.

North Korea complained to Spain of a “kidnapping attempt,” and Spain requested the extradition of Christopher Ahn, who had returned to his home in California.  Amazingly, Fox News has now reported that the Biden Administration is trying to extradite the former marine to Spain, knowing full well that, should he be handed over, there will be assassination attempts made by the North Korean regime.  An extradition of this nature could be seen as an admittance of treason… committed by Ahn.

I am currently teaching a weekly class on the U.S. Constitution.  I recall a recent discussion regarding the supremacy of International Law vs. the Constitution (Federalist 64).  Americans ought to believe that the Constitution is the supreme law of the land.  But, some believe our Constitution should be subordinated to international law.  This belief is typically held by those who promote a “New World Order.”

Ahn, for his part, may not have been strictly operating in the legal realm, but his actions were noble.  If asked, I, too, would do all I could to free those trapped in a brutal communist regime.  We recall stories, during WWII, where regular citizens sheltered and hid Jews from the persecution of Nazi Germany.  The story of Anne Frank is one of the most well-known.

The brave mission undertaken by Christopher Ahn is one such story.  In his case, though, the one placing himself at risk to save others has not been lauded for his heroism.  Instead, he faces potentially grave harm from our own government, which should stand boldly for freedom.

I continue to believe the Constitution is the supreme law in America.  On this Memorial
Day, please remember that patriots are still fighting for our freedoms, and the freedom of others.

Water Line Installation Starts June 1 on Jefferson Avenue, Detours Planned

(City of Pocatello Press Release, May 27, 2021)

Tuesday, June 1, crews from the City of Pocatello Water Department will begin replacing the water main line on Jefferson Avenue.

The project will start at the intersection of Jefferson Avenue and East Poplar Street and continue north to Alameda Road.  During the project, detours and road closures will occur.  Motorists are asked to use alternate routes when possible.

Crews will work between the hours of 6:30 a.m. to approximately 6:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday.  Access to the construction area will be restricted and sections of the street will be completely closed while workers are digging.  However, every effort will be made to provide local access to the area when possible.  Parking will also be restricted in the construction zone and residents are asked to park all vehicles away from the area during the day.  At the close of each day, access will be restored to all properties.

The work may cause short-term disruptions to water service.  Individuals in and around the construction zone are encouraged to keep a supply of drinking water available.

Officials ask parents and guardians to warn children about the safety hazard and to have them stay a safe distance from the construction area.

The project is anticipated to take six weeks to complete but due to unforeseen circumstances, the work schedule may change.

Residents who have questions about this or any Water Department projects can contact department staff at 208-234-6182.

After 40 years of practicing law, City of Pocatello Chief Civil Deputy Attorney Kirk Bybee will be retiring.

A lifelong resident of Pocatello, Kirk graduated from Idaho State University in 1978 and earned his law degree from the University of Idaho in 1981.  For the next 24 years, he spent his time in private practice specializing in litigation and insurance law at Ward, Maguire, and Bybee as well as his own practice.  In January 2005, he joined the City of Pocatello as Chief Civil Deputy Attorney/Risk Manager.  In these roles, he focused on claims, contract work, and personnel issues such as workers’ compensation claims as well as managing the workers’ compensation and risk budgets.  His career also saw him serve as the Sixth District Bar Association President from 1988 to 1999.

“Most of my efforts have been behind the scenes, revising ordinances and the City’s internal policies,” said Kirk.  “Some of the work I’m most proud of at the City has been the non-discrimination ordinance and having the City self-fund its workers’ compensation program.  Moving to self-funding has saved the taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars.  Plus, City staff are better able to work with the injured workers to help get them rehabilitated and back to work.”

“Kirk’s years of experience and legal knowledge have been a tremendous asset to the Legal Department,” said Jared Johnson, City Attorney.  “We appreciate the hard work and dedicated service that Kirk has shown to the City of Pocatello.”

In retirement, Kirk plans to travel with his wife, Jeannie, golf, and spend more time with his children.

“I will miss working with the staff in the Legal Department,” Kirk said.  “They have been a joy.  I will also miss working with the other department heads.  They are serious people and they take great care to make sure that the taxpayers get the best service for their money.”

Kirk’s last day with the City will be June 1.

May 26, 2021

Idaho Representative and Candidate for Lt. Governor Priscilla Giddings

Idaho’s own “Top Gun,” Representative Priscilla Giddings will be the speaker at the June 19 Liberty Dinner hosted by the Pocatello-Chubbuck Observer.  Giddings will be speaking on the fight to maintain Idaho’s conservative values.

Giddings, who recently declared for Lt. Governor, is an Air Force Academy graduate, a fighter pilot, and served nine years of active duty with the Air Force, accumulating nearly 1,000 combat flight hours and nine air medals through three combat deployments.  During flight training she was awarded “Top Gun” as an A-10 fighter pilot.

In her announcement of her entry into the Lt. Governor’s race, Giddings said, “The outgoing Lieutenant Governor is leaving a vacancy in Idaho leadership which is critical to fill with a principled conservative.  Idaho’s next Lieutenant Governor needs to have a solid record of conservative leadership to effectively combat our state’s move away from our constitution and our conservative values.”

Giddings’ conservative record is unmatched, earning her a 100% conservative score from the Idaho Freedom Foundation and a 96% lifetime rating from the American Conservative Union.  She fought for the grocery tax repeal, strongly supported pro-life legislation, helped pass the pro-gun Constitutional Carry law, and serves as the co-chair of the Lieutenant Governor’s Education Task Force to combat Marxism in the schools.

Giddings and her husband Matt live in White Bird with their children.  She is a lifetime member of the VFW, the American Legion, and the NRA.  She was recognized with Idaho’s 2018 Outstanding Woman Veteran Award, and is active with many community organizations.

Liberty Dinner Series events take place on the third Saturday of each month in Pocatello.  The series gives attendees the opportunity to connect with others who share your concerns and values, enjoy a meal, and hear from a speaker engaged in the fight to preserve and/or restore freedoms for Idahoans.  Past speakers have included the founders of RECONNECT Southeast Idaho, Representative Ron Nate, and the Idaho Freedom Foundation’s Anna K. Miller.

The June dinner will be held on Saturday, June 19, beginning at 6:00 p.m., at Mountain Valley Baptist Church, 202 S. 7th Avenue.  The cost to attend is $25 per person.  Reservations are required, and can be made by contacting John Crowder, Publisher of the Pocatello-Chubbuck Observer, via email at jcrowder27@hotmail.com.
